Phala - the term for a karmic result - means 'fruit'.
The result of karma is therefore neither 'punishment' nor 'reward'. It is simply the natural result of an action, just as a seed ripens and produces this or that kind of fruit that will accrue to the doer: "Whoever does dark deeds will reap dark results; and whoever does bright deeds will reap bright results. Both will be reborn in worlds that correspond to their deeds.
